Julie Ma

Burnaby Mountain ('25)

Burnaby Mountain Club President

This is Julie, a high school student that is just like everyone else- but not really? She is someone who encourages for impactful change on all levels: student, community and world. Someone who is curious, constantly wondering who she is meant to be, what the world has for her, or what she has for the world? But also someone who loves the ambiance of life: people, nature and of course, silence. Being in her teenage years, Julie cannot live without something to do, constantly filling up her schedule (but of course, there are those days where she just sleeps and procrastinates… who does not?). As she works two part-time jobs, is a competitive athlete for Team Judo BC, and is involved with organizations such as The Good Guys, there is always something going on. Julie loves the role of being Club President for The Good Guys at Burnaby Mountain Secondary School. With a club executive team that she cannot better ask for, supportive club members, and the great people running the organization, each event that is done truly shows how change can come from anyone. Just from her school club, they have distributed over 500 sandwiches, collected 1000 food donations and raised over $3000 from fundraisers. This is exactly what drives Julie, the feeling of team bonding, the motivation of impact and the ambiance of life. She feels good because other people feel good. In the near future, Julie plans to go into Engineering Business, continuing her path of team bonding and creating change for the community around her.

eMILY XIAO

Sir Winston Churchill ('24)

Director of Marketing and Sir Winston Churchill Club President

“Emily, you always look put together.” For all her life, Emily has been naturally organized. With every initiative or club she takes part in, she helps organize and streamline activities. Eventually, Emily wanted to extend this to GoodGuys, accepting the role as President of Churchill’s GoodGuys club. Inspired by other advocates, like Gemma Chan, Emily too wants to use her voice and actions to make a difference in her community. Growing up in Vancouver, Emily has witnessed a paradoxical world. On one side of town, there are beautifully mowed lawns, while the other has ‘tent cities.’ Recognizing her privilege and responsibility, these stark differences and injustices pushed Emily to make a difference by lending a helping hand to those around her and her local community. Whether she is organizing food and clothing distributions, as the president of the Churchill Good Guys school chapter, she tries her best to use her skills to take initiative and uplift those around her.

JANET ZHAO

Burnaby Mountain ('25)

Burnaby Mountain Club President

From the day Janet started wobbling her little toddler legs on the damp soil of this earth, she wanted to experience everything: all the countless opportunities life had to offer. The unlimited knowledge this world possesses is what propels Janet forward, step after step. Janet can often be seen studying for her numerous AP classes at Burnaby Mountain Secondary School or caught running around like a rabid chicken managing both The Good Guys Club and Grade 11 Council. The Good Guys was an organization that Janet stumbled upon one sweaty summer day as she was hunched over her conspicuously massive laptop. The food and housing struggle has always been a prevalent issue in the Greater Vancouver Area, and it has only exacerbated since the COVID-19 pandemic. With increasing media coverage shedding light on such issues, Janet – just like many of her friends at The Good Guys – wanted to make a change. Despite the planning, workload, and inevitable headaches, Janet would not have it any other way. This experience truly stands out as a highlight in her quest for knowledge, and Janet will forever be convinced the universe pulled some strings to get her to Good Guys. Beyond her leadership roles, Janet is also part of the yearbook committee, where she terrorizes students at Burnaby Mountain who pray that an atrocious, demoralizing picture of themselves will not be in the book. In the future, she hopes to continue embarking on her lifelong journey in the pursuit of knowledge by continuing her studies in medicine… hopefully. Janet’s insatiable thirst for knowledge might be seen as a lifelong blessing or curse but in the words of Sylvia Plath herself, “I want to live and feel all the shades, tones, and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life.” - Sylvia Plath

Karan Joshi

Karan joshi

Burnaby Central ('24)

Burnaby Central Club President

Karan has always loved helping others. From a young age, he assisted his fellow peers with math homework and supported his friends when they needed aid. Karan tried his best to help everyone he could. During lunch breaks and recess, he spent most of his time playing basketball with friends and also picking up trash littered on the playground floors. He was always inspired by the people around him who continued to help the community in any way they could. So, he later joined many community-based clubs, student government, and soon, Good Guys. As a chapter president, Karan is able to help many individuals experiencing homelessness with the support they usually don’t receive but deserve. In his free time, Karan loves to play competitive basketball and enjoys being a skating instructor. For his future, Karan aspires to be a software engineer, which will allow him to experience new sides of technology and new ways it could help others, such as accessibility solutions for the disabled or even diet regimens for certain health conditions.

Ryan liu

Burnaby Central ('24)

Burnaby Central Club President

Ryan is a well-rounded individual, interested in a wide variety of things. At his school, he is the Grade 12 Representative on the Student Council and the Chapter President of Good Guys Central. Ryan started the Good Guys Club at Burnaby Central to provide eager students at his school with the opportunities to volunteer and tackle the homelessness crisis firsthand. In his spare time, you can find him lifting weights, boxing, or playing guitar, basically anything but studying. Ryan is also a strong supporter of the feminist movement, and is heard to stand at a height of 7’8”. In the future, Ryan wants to study a Business + Film dual degree and will continue to serve the community in every way possible!

Anton Bersamira

Vancouver College ('24)

Executive Director and Vancouver College Club President

Anton’s first toy being Lightning McQueen, he’s always told himself “there’s a whole lot more to racin’ than just winnin’.” - Tex Dinoco For as long as he can remember, Anton has loved cars, racing, and everything in between. Outside of his days at Vancouver College, you will find Anton trying to finish an assignment before 11:59 pm, or testing and racing different cars in Assetto Corsa and Grand Theft Auto V. Being from Manila, Philippines, Anton has seen what the lives of people look like under corruption and failed leadership. Thus, he decided to make a difference in his own community by being a student leader in his school’s Student Council, and by helping out, starting as a member of the Vancouver College chapter, at Good Guys. As time went on, Anton was able to take on opportunities that included Director of Logistics and Executive Director at Good Guys, which allows him to present change to the world around him at a local level. On trips to Manila, you will find Anton helping out his community there as well, by providing meals for those in need and bringing joy to children who deserve the world. Being from the Philippine islands, Anton has always enjoyed swimming, and has done competitive swimming. Today, Anton focuses on lifesaving in and out of the water. When he grows older, Anton aspires to be an Attorney specializing in corporate law, and wants to continue to serve his community in the ways that he can.
